Add in fine motor work by having students use kid-safe plastic tweezers to move the mini erasers to the spaces on the mats. I used these these 1 inch circle counters. I wrote a number on each one and they matched them up. You could also use foam tiles and write the numbers on them, number tiles or number magnets.
Another fun way to use them is as counting tower mats. Students will use linking cubes or LEGO blocks to make a tower that corresponds to the number space they are working on. When it comes to teen numbers, students get a kick out of making towers that high. Plus, there is the added benefit of developing fine motor skills. Simply print the mats and slip them into a write and wipe pockets. You can also laminate them instead. Start from any number and then count on from there.
Use the number line for simple number recognition as well. Roll the dice and then find the number rolled. Take your spider to that number. Lay out the big spiders. You can put them in numerical order or a random order.
Toss a little spider onto the pile. What number did it land on? Spread the spiders out across the room. Call out a number or roll the dice. Run to find the spider with that number.
